Ella Enchanted Ella was given the gift of pure obedience at birth by a fairy, Lucinda. This means Ella must obey any given command; this is told be a curse. Ella lives with her mother (Lady Eleanor), her cook (Mandy), her father (Sir Peter), and the rest of her servants. Ella’s father is a nobleman who is always away and knows nothing of the “curse”. Mandy is more like family than the cook, a grandmother of some kind to Ella. Ella has been commanded not to tell anyone of the curse after an incident with a childhood friend. One day Ella and her mother get ill. Mandy makes them soup with unicorn’s hair in it. Ella hates swallowing the hair, but complies due to her curse to obey. Her mother, however, does not eat the hair. The next day Ella is better and her mother is far worse. Within the next week Ella’s mother dies. A funeral is held for Lady Eleanor. Ella’s father commands Ella to leave the funeral after she breaks out in tears. She runs under a willow until Prince Charmont, fondly known as Char, disturbs her.
