Desperation: A Key Role In John Q Desperation: A key role in John Q. Desperation, as defined in the Old English Dictionary, is a desperate state of mind which, on account of the hopelessness or extremely small chance of success, one is led to do any violent or extravagant action, regardless of risks or consequences. In the suspenseful drama John Q., for example, the main character John Q. Archibald, played by Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, becomes desperate enough to hold innocent bystanders hostage in a hospital in order to save his dying son. When John is first introduced, he is a poor man struggling to pay the bills for his family. Although they are poor, their lack of money does not keep them from happiness until John’s son collapses suddenly of heart failure while running to second base at his Little League game. After realizing his inability to pay for his son’s heart transplant, John faces the painful discovery of human’s true motivation, money, and their unwillingness to help him save his son because he will not be able to pay for the procedure.
