Robert E. Lee Robert E. Lee Robert E Lee has always been thought by our nation as a man above the human standard; he is even thought to be a god. To others he was on the contrary. Born on January 19, 1807 at Stratford, Virginia, Robert E. Lee was the fourth child of a man who was a Revolutionary War hero, Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee, and Ann Hill Carter Lee. His father gained military acclaim fighting under both George Washington and Nathaniel Greene. Anne Hill Carter was a member of a family that long held dominant positions in Virginia aristocracy. Although Lee was born into this Virginia aristocracy, he never enjoyed its material benefits. Henry Lee, a three term governor of Virginia after the revolution, squandered his family’s wealth in a series of bad investments. Such financial mismanagement eventually landed his father in debtor’s prison for one year beginning in April 1809. As a result of these early difficulties, Robert E. Lee grew up as a poorer member of Virginia’s upper class. His childhood and adolelescence were spent primarily in the small city of Alexandria.
