Stephen Crane Stephen Crane lived a life of rebellion-against his strict upbringing, his school and university, and what he considered a poorly regulated, unjust society. As the fourteenth and youngest child of a Methodist minister, Crane first chafed against the constraints of his structured family life. The restrictions of university life, however, didn’t agree with him any better. After two years at Hudson River Institute, he spent one semester at Lafayette College and another at Syracuse University. During his time in school, Crane spent more time on the baseball diamond and on writing than he did in the classroom. When he was twenty-two, Crane moved to New York City.
