John Edgar Hoover JOHN EDGAR HOOVER A REVOLUTION IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM Many people considered Hoover as part genius, part monster growing more and more bizarre with age (Sifakis 345). He abruptly fired a Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) agent for being ugly and dismissed another one for wearing a tie he did not like (Phillips and Axelrod 132). It was well noted in the Encyclopedia of American Crime that Hoover purposely “leaked” out false information on crime suspects in order to cause them harm (Sifakis 345). Although Hoover was known as an unjust tyrant he raised a small agency consisting of inexperienced agents, to one of the world’s largest anti-crime organizations. J. Edgar Hoover single-handedly changed the Justice system for the better by showing no tolerance in unprofessional crime fighting and political favors from within the FBI. In 1924, Attorney General Harlan Fiske Stone appointed Hoover as the Director of the FBI, not long after Hoover fired all unqualified employees, and ridded the seniority promotion rule (Sifakis 345). Mr. Hoover set a new standard for recruiting agents, which stated that all recruits must pass a physical test and have training as lawyers or accountants (Phillips and Axelrod 132). hoover, fbi, sifakis, phillips, one, crime, axelrod, after, 345, hoover’s, 132, world, war, public, order, fbigov, edgar, anyone, agents, years, wearing, training, top, took, time, system, superiors, raised, professional, press, popularity, people, part, often, new
