Prevalence:
Using the DSM-IV, it was determined that the prevalence of histrionic personality disorder in the general population was 2%-3%. However, rates as high as 10-15% have been reported for psychiatric outpatient and inpatient populations (Marmar, 2000). One interesting facet of the prevalence is that of a possible sex bias in the diagnosis of histrionic personality disorder in women compared to a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder in men (Ford and Widiger, 1989) (Warner, 1978). This will be explored in detail in subsequent sections.
Course and Outcome:
The course of this disorder is somewhat guesswork, as all patients will display different sets of symptoms as well as having different life experiences. However, based on the general theme of the disorder, one can establish a fairly good idea of the disorders course. The adolescent years started the trend of flamboyant, flirtatious, and attention-seeking behavior. Moving into adulthood, the person may begin to readily establish new relationships, some of which may even be romantic. However, these relationships are quickly ended as the person becomes attracted to another person (Tasman, Kay, Lieberman, 1997).
