Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that severely impacts how two and a half million Americans think, feel, and act. It is a disorder that makes it difficult for a person to differentiate between reality and imagined experiences, to think logically, to express normal emotional responses or to behave normally in social situations. It is one of the most serious and complex disorders of the mind, which can affect people of all races, age and economic standings. Schizophrenic patients have a severe withdrawal from reality as they cannot distinguish between reality and fantasy. This forces the persons to require medical attention relentlessly as they cannot face the daily tasks of their lives. The term schizophrenia literally means split mind, and many people still believe incorrect definition that the condition causes a split personality (which is an uncommon problem involving dissociation). Schizophrenics also suffer from inappropriate moods, hallucinations and delusions, which make them highly unpredictable (sometimes even dangerous) and difficult to care for or treat effectively.
