IQ IQ Researchers use IQ similarities to try and estimate ones heritability of IQ. The heritability estimate (a statistical estimate of the degree of inheritance of a given behavior, assessed by the degree of similarity between individuals who vary in their extent of genetic similarity) is found by computing the variation in all the test scores for a given populations and then identifying what portion of the total variance is due to genetic factors or inherited factors. It is found that heredability increases across ones life span. It starts out at about 40% for 4-6 year olds and increases to 80% in older adults.
