Stats Outline Chapter 1- Introduction to basic concepts Three basic concepts in statistics: The distribution The distribution of means The test statistic Three preliminary concepts in statistics. Statistics is a way of deciding which statements are true Not all statements about truth are statistical. We assess the truth about "inductive" statements by collecting & analyzing data. We must distinguish between populations and samples The population is the group that we're interested in. A sample is some subset of that group. It is our interest that determines whether a group is a population or a sample. It does not necessarily depend on the size of the group.
