Shyness
Shyness is a self-conscious act in which a person avoids establishing personal
relations with others to avoid notice making them appear to be timid and reserved. It is a
common reaction. In 1970, Zimbardo conducted a study to see if this was a prevalent
emotion. He asked his subjects if shyness caused discomfort or inhibited them from
pursuing their interpersonal or professional goals. Forty percent of the subjects he
questioned reported that they were chronically shy (2). A recent survey of a new group of
subjects in 1994 showed that this percent had increased to 50 percent (Zimbardo 2). Out
of the subjects questioned 13.3 percent had felt their shyness was so debilitating that they
had sought medical treatment (2).
