Sensation And Perception Sensation and Perception One Saturday evening, an average teenage guy named Joe decides to go to a party. It is the sort of party that every teenager attends at one time or another. The conscious concerns that Joe has are meeting with his friends, listening to some good music, and trying to look cool dancing so he won’t frighten away the girls. Little does he know of all the complex sensory and perceptual processes going on in his body and his mind which make these simple, everyday actions possible. When Joe enters the room, the first thing he notices is that the room is dimly lit. His eyes must adjust, and do so automatically without any conscious effort on his part. This involves two parts of the eye, the iris and the pupil. The iris, the colored ring around the pupil, is a muscle that contracts and expands to let light in through the pupil. Since it is a dim room, Joe’s iris expands to let in more light. The next thing that Joe notices is that his favorite music, Dave Matthews Band, is playing.
