Restaurant Tipping The purpose of this study was to determine the different factors that can have an effect on restaurant tipping. While party size, weather conditions, day of the week they are visiting, alcohol consumption and method of payments have all shown to be factors in a tipping percentage these studies focused on different gestures and mannerisms that the server can administer and what sort of effect they had on tipping percentages. In a study to show the effect of posture on restaurant tipping it was shown that when the server squatted down next to the patrons it brought their focus on one another closer together. There were two different studies in this experiment. In the first the server thought that when he squatted he would get a more positive reaction than when he didn’t. In the second study the server was told she may get a positive, negative or mixed reaction to that action. In both experiments the servers received a significantly better tipping percentage than when they squatted than when they didn’t because they seemed friendlier and more personable.
