Processing Differences In Embedded Sentences
Running head: PROCESSING DIFFERENCES IN EMBEDDED SENTENCES
Processing Differences in Embedded
Versus Non-Embedded Sentence Structures
Abstract
The differences in reaction times and accuracy of subject relative and object relative embedded sentences as well as control sentences were investigated. Twenty-four students from Rowan University participated in this experiment. Subjects were asked to read a sentence and then decide which picture, A or B, did the sentence correspond to. There were a total of 15 sentences, five from each condition, examined. Their reaction times and accuracy were measured for each sentence. To rule out a memory problem, the stimuli were available to the subject throughout the experiment. If sentence complexity is a result of a processing difficulty, then reaction times will be significantly higher and accuracy lower for the embedded sentences over the control sentences, with the greatest difficulty being placed on object relative sentences. It was found in this experiment that object relative sentences had the highest reaction time and least accuracy, followed by subject relative, and then control.
There are a wide variety of ways to study and understand sentence processing. In order to achieve this, sentence comprehension must involve multiple levels of analysis.
