How Bipolar affects family dynamics
Bipolar is better known as manic-depressive illness, it is a common illness characterized by recurrent episodes of mania followed by a period of major clinical depression. An affected persons mood can swing from excessive highs (mania) to profound hopelessness (depression), usually with periods of normal mood in between. Some individuals may exhibit mixed symptoms of both mania and depression at the same time, while others my have more moderate symptoms of mania.
There are two classifications of bipolar disorder:
Bipolar I:
Have at least one full manic/mixed mood episode within 6 months of each other
May or may not suffer from episodes of depression
Bipolar II:
Have at least one full manic/mixed mood episode
Have at least one period of clinically defined depression
Sometimes it is hard to diagnose due to the manic episodes not appearing unusual
Characteristics of mania and depression
Symptoms of MANIA:
-Increased energy, activity, restlessness, racing through thoughts and rapid speech
-Excessive euphoria
-Extreme irritability distractibility
-Decreased sleep requirement
-Uncharacteristically poor judgment
-Increased and radical sexual drive
-Denial that anything is wrong
-Overspending and indulging
-High-risk behavior
Symptoms of DEPRESSION:
-Persistent sad, anxious, or empty mood
-Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, guilt, worthlessness or helplessness
-Lost of interest or pleasure
