Differences in mean ratings for target cues were found to be significant both between the A+AB+ and C-CD+ contingency and the EF+E+ and GH+G- contingency. The results show that mean ratings for target cue D was significantly higher than target cue B and the mean ratings for target cue H was significantly higher than target cue F. These findings supported the two proposed predictions and therefore replicated previous findings of blocking in both the forward and backward direction in humans (e.g., Van Hamme and Wasserman, 1994).
It may be argued that with the absence of control group contingencies in this research, these observed differences in mean ratings could be the result of differences in cue salience instead of blocking. However counterbalancing of the cues into the four diverse learning sets is sufficient reason to assume same salience between the target and competing cues.
The fact that the effect of learning in these contingencies on the target cues must be due to blocking can be easily seen. The calculation of a difference score between the pre-test and post-test ratings means that any change in a particular cue is the result of learning in
