Fearfulness
Fearfulness
Fear is a condition of an anxiety and terror, which an
individual might experience towards themselves or others.
In the play The Tempest by William Shakespeare, Caliban
hides from fearful situations because he is afraid that he
might get hurt, he states that: Here comes a spirit of
[Prosperos], and to torment me/For bringing wood in slowly.
Ill fall flat/Perhance he will not mind me (II.ii.16-18).
This shows that Caliban fears for his own safety, therefore
he tries to avoids the conflict with spirits. The play
Twilight, by Anna Deavere Smith, shows a feeling of fear for
others, that the Anonymous Young Woman experiences: ...it
was a different fear that Ive ever felt/[...] All I can
think of ... one bottle,/one shear from one bottle in my
fathers car (p.156-157). This means that the Anonymous
Young Woman is more fearful for her father than for herself
and that is why her feeling of fear is different.
Someone, who experiences fear of terror, usually fears
for him or herself. Caliban is terrified of Prosperos
spirits and he fears of what might happen to him. Caliban
says: His spirits hear me,/ And yet I needs must curse. But
theyll nor pinch,/ Fright me with urchin-shows, pitch me
ith mire (Shakespeare, II.ii.4-6). I
