Ego States
The main characters of Lord of the Flies, Ralph, Jack, Simon, Piggy and Roger, portrayed all the different ego states. Some of these characters portrayed more than one ego state throughout the book but most only acted out through one of the states. The three different ego states are the Id, Ego and Superego.
The first ego state I will discuss is the Superego. The Superego is the part of the mind that is the parent voice. A person acting out of this state will know what is right and wrong and knows exactly where the line is drawn. This person will never cross the line because of fear of guilt and punishment if they are bad and they will be good because they get pleasure from it. For most of this book Piggy was a perfect example of the Superego. He was the parent of the island opposed to the others who acted Like kids. Acting like a crowd of kids. (Pg 38) This was Piggy talking about how the other boys were acting on the island. Piggy was the only kid who acted as a grown up would
