DRUG THERAPY AND HYPERACTIVITY
4 to 12 percent of school age children suffer from hyperactivity disorders. The symptoms include short attention span, impulsive behavior, difficulty in focusing, and standing still. Drug therapy has been a growing concern among parents, school officials, doctors, and many therapists. Inaccurate diagnoses can be disadvantageous to students in the learning environment and also lead to an abundance of stimulant medications given out.
One well-known disorder associated with hyperactivity is ADHD and is considered create impulsivity that is more frequent and severe that those in comparable levels of development. It is a neurobiological, developmental disability caused by a chemical imbalance or deficiency in certain neurotransmitters. The problems these children face among many others are noncompliance, academic and social deficits, and self-self management problems. These problems are usually undetected until put in classroom settings.
