Patriot Act The Patriot Act Policy Problem The 2001 Patriot Act granted the federal government with the power to investigate or in prison anyone suspected of terrorism without due process. The act also enabled all of the intelligence agencies to share all of their information on suspected terrorists and potential threats. This is a major problem that has many wondering if the government has too much power, and is taking away peoples rights that every person has in the Bill of Rights. History In the aftermath of September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the U.S. Congress at the urging of the Bush administration, overwhelmingly passed the 2001 Patriot Act. The Act stands for “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism,” is mainly intended to provide law enforcement with legally defined authorization to prevent and respond to potential terrorist threats against the U.S. But not every American citizen agrees with the policies of the Patriot Act. “There has been opposition to the act from every part of the political spectrum from the extreme left to the faithful libertarians, have all expressed their concerns about this new law”(1).
