Political Independence Political independence, in my opinion, is the ability of a society to govern itself without the influence of a controlling and contrary external entity. Political sovereignty of a society is dependent upon whether or not the people within it are uniform in their ultimate societal and political goals. If there are sever conflicting ideals among different groups in the society about how to govern the total body, then political differences tend to spit the people into opposing groups. The same can be said for religious beliefs also. As within any society, there will be power struggles and there is a dominant group and a subordinate group. The dominant group usually tries to thrusts its political or religious ideals upon the people of the subordinate group, but they are met with very strong opposition. This is the case with the U.S. and Great Britain. Though we had our own system to govern ourselves, we were still under British rule. In this case, we were not totally free to exhibit total political autonomy, until we won our freedom from Great Britain.
