Melting Pot Are We a Melting Pot' Immigration creates diversity which is the quality of being different.(pg. 339) Different definitely does not mean bad, but others do not feel that same way. Early immigrants into the United States were met with harsh tension. A fight between the Old and the New, the new and the “White.” Americans could not handle this diversity and they wanted everyone to be the same. They expected all of the immigrants to jump into the “melting pot” and come out “American”(pg. 8) What they did not understand was that no two cultures will be alike, and we will never be equal in any intercultural encounter.
