It was a combination of trade and economic necessities that led the United States to acquire an overseas empire during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Our country is not so selfless that it would do something with the sole purpose to help others with no gain of our own. There is always an ulterior motive to the actions of our government than the one conveyed upon the national public. As in the case of our annexation of the Philippine islands we were told that the Filipinos needed someone to control them for they were incompetent and incapable of governing themselves. Americans, part of the FIT in society, had a duty to take the Filipinos, who were part of the UNFIT, under our strong unwavering wing. In reality the U.S had a far different reason in annexing the Philippines. First of all, they did not want any other country taking over the Philippines for that might cause competition for the United States. A main reason for the annexation was for American businesses to have a base for selling American goods in the sought-after Chinese market. The United States also extended
