Gun Control The majority of people in the United States have many misconceptions about gun accidents, and few facts about them. This is likely one of the reasons that many people feel stronger restrictions on handguns will prevent handgun accidents. This, however, is simply not the case. One of the largest misconceptions is that most gun accidents involve kids. There are TV ad campaigns that demonstrate this as a huge risk of owning a handgun. The truth of the matter is that in 1995, the most recent available statistic, only 200 kids died from gun accidents in the United States. That’s only 3% of all the fatal accidents among children that year. This also puts to rest the generalization that adult gun owners are irresponsible with their weapons, and leave them easily accessible to children. Another great misconception is simply that more gun accidents occur than actually do. In 1970, among a population of 203 million in the U.S., there were 2,400 fatal handgun accidents total. More importantly, however, in 1995, with a population of 262 million, there were a total of 1,400 fatal handgun accidents.
