When one takes a look at art and how it has developed its hard to not recognize the important movements in art. Just a few examples of these movements start with the Byzantine movement, the Renaissance, Cubism, and Dadaism. If you look at art and think of it as a person you can look at each movement as a stage in that persons life. The renaissance could in turn be thought of as adolescence. There are so many important things that occurred during this time that its hard to sum it up in one sentence. However, I would say that Renaissance means "rebirth"(c.1400-1550) it began in Italy, and stressed the forms of classical antiquity, a realistic symbol of space based on perspective, and worldly subjects. The works of Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael illustrate the balance and harmony of the High Renaissance (c. 1495-1520). Although many great artists came up out of the Renaissance there were those that were pre-renaissance such as Giotto (c.1267-1337) who inspired and sparked the start of the renaissance.
