A Powerful Element Of Christianity Present Throughout Rime Of The Ancient Mariner The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a lengthy poem that is broken into seven parts and was written originally in 1798 (revised in 1817) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Throughout the poem several elements of Christianity appear continuously. One of the most powerful and very present elements is that of the Holy Spirit, which is found in: the Albatross; in the many strange occurrences that occur to the Mariner; and acknowledged by the Mariner. There are many signs that the (Holy)Spirit is with the ship during its fateful voyage. The first obvious sign is the Albatross. It could be thought that the Spirit sent and is present in the Albatross that appears towards the end of the first part, “At length did cross an Albatross: Thorough the fog it came; As if it had been a Christian soul, We hailed it in God’s name.” (Coleridge, 63-66) This idea is supported by the fact that the Catholic symbol for the Holy Spirit is the shape of a bird, making this not a far stretch.
