What Is Representative Realism'
John Locke thought that the ideas or perceptions, which we have of objects in the external world, represent themselves, whether they are being perceived or not. The view John Locke continually uses is called representative realism. The term realism refers to the view that objects are real or exist. Representative means that some of our perceptions accurately represent as the thing it is in itself aside from the perception. While trying to digest all the information discussing the topic, I found a website that was helpful in that it broke down each term and described how the process of perceiving and distinguishing things come together.
Representative realism can be broken down into two main categories. The perception, which accurately represents the object as the thing, which it is in itself apart from awareness, is called primary qualities. Qualities of an object which appear when we perceive it, such as its color, which are not taken to be mind-dependant are called secondary properties. The distinction between the primary and secondary qualities is old and has been acknowledged by both philosophy and science. While many people have argued with Locke, other philosophers such as
