Beowulf Beowulf There are many epics that are read and heard about in old-English mythology. The unknown Christian monk who wrote Beowulf introduced him as a boy and follows him into his death as a king. Through his battles with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and finally the snake, Beowulf displays his development from adolescent to nobleman. Going into battle with Grendel, Beowulf was at the young age of seventeen. Though just a boy, he took charge and “chose the mightiest of men he could find...(120)” to go with him to defeat the monster. He wanted to show the people that he could be a great warrior and put his trust into God to “...decide who will be given to death’s cold grip(174-175).” Beowulf wants to prove his worth as a fighter. He wants the people to overlook his image as a boy and get them to see his inner strengths of a warrior. Beowulf wants to be seen as more linear than circular. When the word ‘boy’ is thought of, it is usually taken to be circular. When males are of the age considered to be boys, their day might include routine chores for people of authority. When the word ‘warrior’ is thought of, it might be taken more as linear.
