Michelangelo

Michelangelo Michelangelo Michelangelo was one of the greatest artists to ever live. Such works as the Sistine Chapel, the Pieta, and the David are a testament to his mastery. There is much to learn about Michelangelo, and the masterpieces he left behind. Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475 just outside of Florence. His mother died when he was only six, and his father raised him to be a stonecutter. When Michelangelo told his father that he wanted to be an artist, he was very much opposed. Michelangelo followed his own wishes however and studied painting in Ghirlandaio’s studio. He studied with others throughout his younger years, and accomplished many small works. His first major work, a sculpture titled “The Pieta”, depicts the Virgin Mary holding the dead Christ across her lap. He finished it before he was twenty-five years old, and it still stands in St. Peter’s Basilica today.
