Evolution of the Genus Homo Homo neanderthalensis, also known as Neanderthals, are one of the best-known archaic human populations. They lived 250,000 to 30,000 years ago in Europe and Eastern Asia around the time of the fourth glaciation. There were many adaptations in the Neanderthal culture. They created a variation in their tools from previous cultures and the cold environment caused adaptations in their physical structure. The Neanderthals are also thought to be the first human species to have made the burial of the dead a ritual. The Neanderthals flourished as a human species in a harsh and demanding environment. The Neanderthals lived during the Wurm glaciation, the fourth glaciation. The Wurm was a series of relatively rapid glacial advances and retreats, causing changes in the surrounding environment. An abundant amount of life accommodated the “seemingly inhospitable climate”, herd of animals, vegetation and especially some human populations (Jolly & Plog, p.308). The Neanderthals survived the cold climate with the help of some physical adaptations. Fossils indicate that the Neanderthals were short, stocky and powerfully built.
