Recollection Of The Events In Artigat Driscoll 1 During the mid to late fifteenth century lived a man, Martin Guerre, with a son, lovely wife, and a world of inheritance. With all this and more awaiting him in his future he fled, he fled for fear of his father’s punishment. He feared because he stole grain from his father a wrongful doing in the Basque ways. This episode sparked a series of events, which would be talked about for years. It was 1527 Sanxi Daguerre and his younger unwed brother left the town of Hendaye in Labourd, a county on the border of France and Spain. Since 1523 Francois I of France and Charles the V of Spain have quarreled. It was during this time the imperial troops marched through Hendaye and ravaged the Labourd. In 1524 the plague hit and in 1525 Sanxi had a son Martin. The brothers left, leaving an ancestral property to be one day inherited by Martin. They traveled three weeks walking distance to a village called Artigat. Artigat was found in the plains south of the Pyrenees foothills on the either side of the Leze River.
