The Endangered Gorilla Taxonomy Gorillas belong to the family hominidae. It is common in this family for males to be larger than females. Reproductive Biology Gorillas breed during any season, and give birth on average to a gorilla every three to four years after a nine month gestation period. In the case of twins the mother often allows one of them to die. On average a mother only produces a survivable gorilla every 6-8 years. The gorillas have an average lifespan of around 40 years. Ecological Relationships Gorillas primarily live in open canopy tropical rain forest from sea level to mountains. They eat various forms of vegetation.
