The Akhal-Teke The Akhal-Teke The Akhal-Teke first came from Turkmenistan, where it descended from the ancient Turkmenian horse, which was one of the first horse types that crossed the Bering Straight from America in pre-historic times. Until recently, this horse was very little known outside of the former Soviet Union. Its name dates only back to the 19th century, but there is excavation evidence that the horse dated back as far as 2400BC. The Akhal-Teke got its name from where it came from, and by who discovered it. “Akhal” is the long oasis in the foothills of the Kopet Dag Mountains, and “Teke” is after the Turkmen tribe who inhabited the oasis for centuries and raised the horses. The breed characteristics of this horse are unique among the equestrian breeds. Its features are described as dry, thin, straight, high-set, and lean. It has a long tapering, aristocratic face, wide nostrils and large expressive eyes.
