A seed certainly looks dead. It does not seem to move, to grow, nor do anything. In fact, even with biochemical tests for the metabolic processes we associate with life (respiration, etc.) the rate of these processes is so slow that it would be difficult to determine whether there really was anything alive in a seed.
Seeds initially germinate when they absorb water, bursting the seed coat. Heat and light energy necessary for the process of germination. Some plants rely more on heat, others more on light. Heat and light energy starts chemical reactions in embryo. This chemical energy stored as starch in the seed, is changed to sugar for use during germination. The development of the plant embryo is controlled by hormones as well and a plant can be artificially made to germinate by treating it with the correct hormones. Germination, involves the bringing together of essential chemicals, hydrogen and oxygen, to generate energy that will be directed toward expanding and propelling the two growing points of the germinating seed outward (upward and downward if guided properly).
After a formation of an embryo plant convert solar energy into stored chemical
