Magna Carta Magna Carta History: King John became king of England in 1199 when his brother, King Richard I, died. To many he was mean, greedy and overall a failure as king. In 1205, while arguing over sucession of the throne w/ his nephew, Arthur, England lost the territory of France, and to try and regain the land for the rest of his reign he kept raising taxes to pay for his campaigns, though every time he went to France to fight England ___ lost. In the year 1215 England's upper class was tired of paying the extra taxes. People rebelled in May 1215 and captured London. In June of that same year King John met their demands by signing the Magna Carta or in Latin the "Great Charter". The document was revissed in the years 1216, 1217, and 1225. Lots of people think that the Magna Carta is a very important part of English history, which protected the rights of citicens from the power of the king or queen.
