Mark Antony: The Man Behind The Image Marcus Antonius: The man behind the Image. Marcus Antonius had many interesting years. Many were spent in Rome, few in Egypt, and some abroad. He was known as lover, father, and general to the Roman people. He was manipulative yet subservient, loyal yet traitorous, and sophisticated yet simple. Marcus Antonius was born in 83 BCE in Egypt. As the son of General Marcus Antonius and Julia Caesar, he was the second cousin of Julius Caesar. Plutarch, a roman historian, stated that Antony (Marcus Antonius) spent most of his life with a “lack of parental guidance” (4Reference.net 1). Apparently, he spent most of his teenage life in a state of flux. He attended many gambling houses, was involved in many odious love affairs, as well as having a tendency to drink way too much. Plutarch mentions that before he [Antony] reached 20 years of age that he was already in debt to the tune of 250 talents (equivalent to several million Euro) (4Reference.net 1). After this turbulent period he went to Greece to study rhetoric (4Reference.net 1).
