The Debacle The Debacle from a historical standpoint was a great novel to read. In this book the description of every event was outstanding. The Franco-Prussian War was not a very long war if you compare it to other wars throughout history. In this novel we are shown how the French were easily defeated. We are also told the reasons why they were defeated, which I will talk about in this paper. The experiences of the soldiers are very descriptive and very realistic. The French was virtually unstoppable at that time and we see a thriving empire coming crumbling down. I will also compare the statements of Zola with that of Remarque’s, All Quiet on the Western Front and some World War II poems we have read. I will also examine in this paper how technological advances may have affected the way they might have fought in theses wars. Emile Zola was able to construct a novel that was a great historical piece with arguably all fact expect a few pieces. The Franco-Prussian War was a battle of great strategy and brilliant decision-making.
