Langston Hughes Racial issues is a world-wide problem in the modern day, this is also the case in the time that Langston Hughes wrote his poetry. The United States was going through hard times of segregation issues between African Americans and Caucasians. Although this problem still exists somewhat it’s people like Hughes that brought it to attention that no matter what your race is be proud of who you are because we are all created equal. He projects his opinion that he is African American and wants everyone to believe in the same social justice he does. Hughes expressed these ideas through poetry, plays, novels, and essays. “Among his many poetry titles…(the) argue of passionately belief in human equality, a wish for color-blind brotherhood, and a growing disillusionment with the American dream.(3)” Hughes wrote many poems in particular to show his pride in social identity, “Me and the Mule” is a good example of this idea which shows that Hughes is proud to be black and wants to let society know that he is just the same as everyone else.
