Childhood Suicide Suicide knows no discrimination, color, age or sex. Nor does a person have to be mentally deranged to commit suicide. Over the past 10 years, suicide has risen to the third leading cause of death for ten to sixteen year olds (Fassler, D.). When puberty begins, the young person is facing a number of problems he or she has never dealt with before. Adolescent suicide is now being linked to early childhood experiences. Adolescent suicide may be based on guilt, confusion, or lack of self esteem resulting from many different experiences. The thought of suicide crosses everyone’s mind at sometime in his or her life. Teens and adults who suffered abuse or other negative experiences during childhood are far more likely to attempt suicide at some point in their life. Thos who reported being emotionally abused as a child were five times more likely to report a suicide attempt. Those with parents who divorced or separated were only two times more likely to attempt suicide. Only 1.1% of adults without any negative childhood experiences reported an attempt. Negative childhood experiences often lead to childhood depression.
