Great Depression World War II Relationships of the Allies: Britain, Soviet Union, and U.S. stuck together to defeat Germany, but they disagreed over when to open a 2nd front, how to structure a new international organization, how liberated eastern Europe would be reconstructed, how Germany and Japan would be governed after defeat. Allied leaders seemed more intent on retaining and expanding their own nations' spheres of influence than on building a community of neutral interest. Allied Strategy for Fighting the War: Allies reached one important agreement: recognizing that if Germany gained control over Europe's resources, the Nazis might directly threaten the Americas, and worrying that the Germans would develop an atomic bomb before the Japanese did, Allied strategists devised a 'Europe first' formula - knock out Germany and then concentrate on an isolated Japan. Second Front Issues: Soviet premier Joseph Stalin pressed for a British-American landing on the western coast to drive German troops away from the eastern front (map p.762) but Churchill wouldn't agree. So, Red Army (Soviets) fought and died on land, while British and Americans concentrated on getting Lend-Lease supplies across Atlantic and harassing Germans from air with attacks on factories and civilians.
