Discuss The Issue Of Mining With Reference To Kakadu Uranium mining is the most controversial of all mining activities. Uranium is the mineral ore that fuels the nuclear energy cycle. Kakadu has a vast reserve of Uranium ore, from which mining companies have been keen to profit. To help resolve the issues the Federal government introduce the Ranger Uranium inquiry. The decision to allow the establishment of the min was an outcome of the inquiry’s deliberations. The Ranger uranium mine is located on a 79-km² lease, surrounded by Kakadu National Park. Since the mines opening in 1980, sales of uranium ore have exceeded $2.8 billion. Ranger is one of the most highly regulated mines in the world. The mine also employs a large team of environmental officers, whose main responsibility is to monitor and mange the flow of water from the site. 2 factors make the management of water difficult: the variable monsoon climate and the environmental sensitivity of the areas wetlands and flood plains. Contaminated runoff from the ore dumps and waste rock piles is channelled into dams and artificial wetlands. In very wet seasons, the main pit is used to store any overflow from the dams. A proposal to release contaminated water in 1994-95 was abandoned after protests from Aboriginal groups living downstream.
