Advanced Remote Sensing
Analysis/ Critique
For the past three semesters I have been very interested in the phenomena of wildfires.
Through this interest I have come to realize the many benefits and the heavy costs of these fires as they impact the environment and the people who inhabit them. As technology increases so does the ability to better detect and monitor these fires. People directly fight these fires and the people who monitor the effects of them have within the past decade been able to use satellite images and remote sensing to better prepare for battles against the flames greatly reducing the risk to the people who are on the front lines against these blazes. A researcher at UC Davis presented an article about monitoring biomass produced by forest fires in the boreal forest ecosystem using, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) which produce National Difference Vegetation Index( NDVI) greenness values composite images.
Monitoring of Wildfires in Boreal Forests Using Large Area AVHRR NDVI Composite Imagery, (several Authors) researches the use of imagery to map and monitor the effect of wild fires on Boreal forest in Alaska in a global context. Boreal forest account for eight to 10 percent of the worlds
