Article review
Learning to live with nature:
The lessons of traditional irrigation
By
Edward Goldsmith
The Ecologist Asia
Why this topic/article
The article is taken from the special edition of economist focusing on Dams or rather on the lessons that we have received through our experience with them during the last fifty years. As mentioned by the author nature is inflexible and demands conformity from which derives the simple axiom It is our way, not Natures, which can be changed.
The reason for selecting this topic is that I am biased towards it. And the primary reason for being biased is that I hail from the Malwa region, which is totally dependant upon the mercy of Narmada for its yearly water needs.
With the supreme courts landmark verdict in favor of the sardar sarovar dam this issue becomes all the more gripping.
The reason for selecting this particular article out of the host of other ones available on the same topic in this magazine is that instead of criticizing or rather commenting on the follies it tries to go deeper into the subject and questions the very fundamental needs of man to use water resources in the most efficient way.
Thus it encompasses issues raised in some of the
