Religion And Education
Religion and Public Schools
Each day, following state law, many teachers around the US lead students in a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. The specific law states that public schools begin each school day with "appropriate patriotic exercises" and that the Pledge would be sufficient to comply. The specific school policy states that "Each elementary school class [shall] recite the pledge of allegiance to the flag once each day."
However, when taken to court a case of the state of California it was found that a similar case to this one was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (although it should be noted that Barnette was decided in 1943 and the words "under God" were not added until 1954).
How clear is it if the Pledge to Allegiance is about God or about the Nations principals and constitution' To this date the battle continues and the only real fact is that no matter what the Supreme Court decides everyone will not be happy. What is good for some is not always good for others.
