Early Literacy The first discussion I overheard was between my aunt and my two cousins. The older of my two cousins is 15 and the youngest is 2 but is delayed developmentally. He has very limited vocabulary, but is very expressive. The conversation was taking place during preparation for dinner that night. My aunt was standing against the kitchen counter preparing ingredients for a salad, and my littlest cousin Reese standing on a chair against the counter watching and helping. The conversation was interesting because of the abilities of my cousin that I described earlier. Reese was fascinated with all the products and tools that were on the counter being used to make this salad. As I said, he cannot talk much, so the majority of the things he was saying were only two word telegraphic sentences, but he was very clear about each thing. First he wanted my aunt to tell him what you called the big bowl by pointing to it and saying “Dis'”. My aunt told him bowl, and he tried his best to repeat it. This process went on for almost everything she would bring out of the fridge or cabinet.
