Critical Thinking A general survey of the literature on teaching critical thinking skills allows us to identify several specific skills, strategies, and heuristics that researchers believe are essential for developing sophisticated critical thinkers. In keeping with my distaste for fastidious algorithms and/or domain specific knowledge, I have chosen to focus today on the more global criteria of all those proposed or advance by the various researchers and theorists. Which is why I rejected Johnson¡¦s list of critical thinking skills (which is limited to formal argument and analytic skills) and instead I have opted to illuminate Bailin, Cooms and Daniels¡¦ work in 1999, which advocates a set of Dispositional Critical Thinking Skills that can be taught and gainfully employed in all subjects and situations. Break large problems/situations into smaller, more manageable chunks Consider both sides of every coin Consider alternate courses of action and resources Take as much relevant information into account as possible If you don¡¦t know, ask! Approach reputable people or sources for information. Respect legitimate authority Recognize and remember biases on your part or someone else¡¦s Be open minded, fair minded, and independent minded Be reflective ¡V think about the way you think, and whether or not it is helpful in this particular situation or in other situations.. Respect skills, thinking, critical, thinkers, students, strategies, out, knowledge, expert, domain, specific, various, think, questions, point, table, situation, simple, respect, relevant, praise, particular, part, novice, minded, medicine, know, experts, ask, alternate, about, view, try
