Helping Children Read Thursday, August 8, 2003 Teachers have various roles when in the classroom. It is our responsibility to help children achieve great learning strategies (habits) and to also correct any misconception and/or break bad habits. It is vital to activate your students schema, allow them time to think, let their minds wonder, and most of all to allow them to do so wit their own ideas (topics.) Ask the class to close their eyes and imagine pictures that accompany the words. When an image is in your mind, it makes it easier to understand the text. This is why picture books are appropriate for younger children. Many picture books have few words and the pictures tell most of the story. For older children most of the time pictures are on every other ten pages. Pictures can help describe the main idea throughout the last few pages. Students must be able to determine the importance of specific text. Teachers must have their class practice identifying the main idea.
