The Green Revolution What do you think of when you see an ear of corn' I use to picture someone in the field just picking the ear, along with many others, and shipping them out across the country. However there is more to this process than just that. The U.S. government, actually the U.S. Agency of International Development, came up with the term Green Revolution. This new idea was to create higher yields of produce by farmers thus increasing profits. To obtain these gains the farmers would need to use chemicals, fertilizers, and new ways of cultivation. They were to use high yielding seeds that were made through selective breeding. Scientists, through funding, came up with new seeds by taking qualities of high production strands and mixing them. These “super” seeds would then have the best qualities and produce more food. Well this increase in food production was also believed to help stop hunger in the world. However the plan did not compensate for the inequality in income distribution worldwide. The Green Revolution came into play in the 1960’s.
