The Coverdell ESA And Education Credits The Coverdell ESA and Education Credits One of the many responsibilities of having children is helping pay for their education. As we all know, a solid education is the foundation for an individual’s success. However, school days are, to say the least, expensive days. By 2020 a college education, depending on whether your child attends an Ivy League or public university, could cost between $90,000 and $200,000. It was not that long ago that parents and their children were basically on their own when it came to paying for college. That all changed a few years ago when the government began to implement tax-based programs to help people pay for school. The good news is that these programs have been expanded even more under the 2001 Tax Relief Reconciliation Act. One of these programs, the Education IRA, is meant to help parents and relatives save for college. Some of the other programs, such as the Hope Scholarship and the Lifetime Learning Credit help people pay for higher education expenses by offering tax- saving incentives.
