It was difficult to make sense of why immigrant mothers choose to leave their children and go to foreign countries until I read the Enrique’s Journey. Enrique’s Journey was originated from his mother, Lourdes’ journey, with the hope to provide a better future for her children. The US was like a beacon for the people living in Honduras, the “only one place that offers hope (Nazario 21)”. Behind the danger and the suffering of immigrants on the train to Mexico and then the US, there also lies the hold hard truth of the ugly human nature, the exploitation of the weak with extreme cruelty. It is chilling to read how gangsters would rape girls, kidnap children and threaten their mothers. It is also heartbreaking to see the cycle of hatred, violence, and separation continue as the governments are not doing enough to stop the tragedy. This book in general reinforces my belief that poverty is the source of evil and the ultimate enemy of humanity.
Enrique’s Journey reveals the unimaginable suffering immigrants go through before entering the US, issues which conventional media rarely covered before. On the way of immigrating to the US, it is common for the immigrants to be deceived, threatened, abandoned, sexually abused, and even tortured by the smugglers. As a result, only a small proportion of the immigrants can survive the journey and manage to enter the US. Their misery does not end here. In the US, immigrants commonly face the fear of deportation and become victims of violent crimes. They are also the victims of racism from the local people: “They look at you as if you are a flea (Nazario 160).” Emotional isolation between mothers and their children further contributes to profound social problems in both the US and back in Honduras. According to a comment made by an immigrant mother “People move around, but not find peace (Nazario 162).” While it is extremely difficult for individuals to make a difference to such a situation, there do exist solutions from the authorities that can reduce the suffering. By bringing the individual struggles of immigrant mothers and their children into light, the “dehumanized and demonized (Nazario 10)” image of immigrants should be replaced by a more sympathizing and constructive perspectives.
