Introduction
It is known to us that the formation of our identity in the cultural background is quite complex and it may be influenced by various things in our life. And there is no doubt that the formation of identity for different people may vary, more or less, from one another due to their different cultural backgrounds and different things occurring in people’s life. Therefore in the following I would like to talk about the complexity of my identity formation in my Chinese cultural context and I would like to concentrate on the cultural differences between urban and rural areas.
Cultural Differences between Urban and Rural Areas
When I was young, I lived in the city with my parents. At that time, I could frequently see a lot of laborers who came to the city from remote areas in order to make a living. Apparently, their life in the city was hard and they had to suffer a lot during that process. What’s worse, they seemed to be looked down upon by people in the city due to their accent, the way they dressed and the low status they had in the society. In the meantime, they could only do those jobs that the citizens did not like to do and they were paid lower than the citizens even if they were doing the same job. What is also a pity to say is that they seldom got the chance to be promoted even if they were more competent than the citizens. But the life as a citizen tends to be easier and they seem to have more privileges than those laborers from remote areas.
At the same time, I would often visit my relatives who lived in the rural areas. Whenever my parents had time, they would bring me there to let me experience the difficulty of the life of people living in the remote area. I have to admit that I really detect the differences in the living environment and humanity between the urban and rural areas when I lived there. Generally speaking, people in the rural areas are all enthusiastic and simple while people in the city appear to be more complex. The more detailed case is that people in the rural areas will visit each other from time to time and they are willing to help one another when necessary. So a fair knowledge can be obtained that people in the rural areas know one another well and they would like to talk face to face with others. Every time I went there, many local people were so hospitable and they smiled at me all the time. I actually got along well with them and I had made many friends.
However, the pace of the city is so fast that people have no choice but to get themselves involved in the social competition. They sometimes even become indifferent to others’ issue and they may not give a hand to others in trouble. As a result, they pay little attention to dealing with their neighbors or people around. It is quite common for people living in the same community that do not know each other. And people in the city tend to play with their phones too frequently that they neglect people nearby and they actually live a high pressure life because they have put too much burden on themselves.
After experiencing the distinct cultural differences between the urban and rural areas, I have to say that my outlook has been influenced a lot by what I have undergone when I was little. To put it more specifically, I learn that it is necessary for me to accept all kinds of different cultures, to respect people’s background, culture and habits, to treat others equally when I study or live in the city. Obviously, I learn that it is necessary for me to get myself rid of the idea that people from the rural areas are inferior than those living in the rural areas. Furthermore, I have updated such awareness to other levels as well and I can now treat people from all over the world equally because I would like to see the harmony and equality among people in the globe.
In addition, it is just out of my previous experience that I am not too surprised at the integration and differences of various different cultures when I come to the United States. It can be easily understood in that the previous interpretation of the cultural differences between the urban and rural areas have enabled me to have the awareness of the cultural differences from all kinds of levels, like the area level, the country level and so on. In the opposite, I may be completely at loss if I do not have that experience when I was young and everything may be hard for me to accept at this moment.
Conclusion
To sum up, a reasonable conclusion can be drawn that there are definitely a lot of cultural differences between the urban and the rural area. And it is certain that the past experience can really play a role in demonstrating the complexity of identity formation in a cultural context. There is no doubt that many other relevant aspects concerning cultural differences between the urban and the rural area as are not mentioned in the above, which calls for further discoveries in the future. Only in this way can a more comprehensive understanding of the cultural differences between the urban and the rural area be reached at last.
